Preserving a dummy cake decorated in fondant icing

Hi

I have recently made a carousel cake for my granddaughter combining real cake with dummy cakes which have all been decorated in fondant icing. My granddaughter wants to keep the decorated dummy cakes but I am not sure how to preserve them. Could anyone suggest how to do this?

Hi kimmi57

A friend of mine has still got her’s which I made when the tutorial was first published! All I did after the child’s christening was, to spray the whole thing with PME clear glaze spray. She has it displayed in a glass wall cabinet and it still looks good.
The dummies should be kept in a cool place away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat like radiators. Some people spray decorated dummies with hair spray, apparently that works. I’ve never done it and can’t vouche for results.

Hi madeitwithlove

Thank you for that. I will give it a try.

To prevent the spray streaking keep the can a good distance from the dummies while spraying. As the product contains shellac, cover up all your work surfaces because this is a very difficult substance to remove with ordinary detergent. Good luck with preserving! 🙂

Hi, I think that eventually the dummies cake fades and does not look so good. Saying that I have kept a few for about three years. When you had enough of them- pop whole thing in a dishwasher and you can re use it again.
