Question about the black on the formula 1car

Hi there is there any way around getting the black on the car other than painting it just I can’t get the edible paint where I live and to order online takes to long to deliver to my country. I need to start making the cake this week. How would I put black fondant on instead before the red goes on or after or anyone got any other ideas please?

Hi woodyscakes

Yes you can do it with black fondant but the only thing you have to be careful of is not to mark the red.
In several tutorials Paul does overlays or two different colours and cuts off the excess of the joining one.
You can see what I mean here http://www.cakeflix.com/basque-cake-lesson-5-covering-the-boobs
You’ll need to fast forward the video until you get to the part where he is trimming the fondant over the boobs.
He does it again here http://www.cakeflix.com/loch-ness-cake-lesson-2-covering-the-cake revealing blue fondant under green. I think perhaps this is the better reveal!
Because black fondant is very soft I would suggest adding a small amount of either tylose, CMC or gum tragacanth through it just enough to strengthen it so it’s less sticky.
I hope this all makes sense, I don’t always get across what I mean! I have used Paul’s technique, it can be a bit scary, the fear is that the two fondants will stick together but it does work with surprising ease. I think if I was doing the F1 in this way I would dust the red with a little icing sugar as well so the black doesn’t stick too much and can be lifted off easily. Any icing sugar marks disappear once the car is sprayed with the glaze and any black marks can be ‘washed’ off with a moist paint brush dipped in vodka.
Hope Paul’s technique helps.

Thanks so much madeitwithlove I’m really nervous about making this cake I’m quiet novice in making cakes and where I live I always have to improvise cause I don’t seem to be able to get the stuff I need. Out of all the cakes I’ve made I seem to be nervous about this one for some reason. Thanks once again

Good luck with the cake. It’s scary I know from when I did the basque cake but it gave me confidence to do others.
I had no one in the house to distract me and it went like a dream. I really hope it will for you too. x

I used the black fondant I cut away the red and then put the black on it was a bit of a trauma at 1st but it blended in nicely and turned out really nice.
