I haven’t got any newspaper. can I sit the fruit cake on thick cardboard as it gonna be on very low temp?

I don’t see why not. I would make it damp first. Personally, I’ve never stood the tin on newspaper. I wrap my tins in triple band of wet brown paper , secured with butchers string.
