sponge flavours toffee cake

hiya could anybody tell me if the toffee cake is still a white (ish ) sponge once its cooked??
i was just looking on the previous toffee cake Q&A and somebody suggested to use the usual vanilla sponge recipe and to add a can of condensed milk to make the toffee flavour which is the easiest option for me to try out of all the suggestions as there are no tesco or asda here in greece.
the reason i’m asking if the cake stays white/yellow in colour is because i’m aiming to make a leopard print on the inside but if it turns brown the pattern will not show. i’m already doing a vanilla sponge with zebra effect on the inside so thought it would be a nice touch for my second tier to have leopard print. does anybody have another sponge recipe i could use if the toffee is a no go??

The toffee cake comes out a golden colour, dark brown will probably show up ok. How about making the print in a brighter colour?

hiya i’ve had an absolute disaster taoday.. its totally knocked my confidence :/ i know i’m a beginner but i was doing so well i guess it was beginners luck cause today shows i have no clue in what i’m doing! the toffee / chocolate zebra tastes nice but its flat i used 9 eggs492g each of butter sugar flour and added the caramel then separated the batter and added chocolate powder to half the batch to make the zebra stripes then poured alternate 1/4 cups on top of each other to fill my 3 pans. the oven is greek and from the 80’s!!! so its tiny and one burnt so i now have 2 sponges that havnt really risen that high and i’m trying to get height to make a tiered cake so .. the party is tomorrow and i have yet to make any progress. what a palaver!

Hi pistolaki

Might be better if you make one of your more successful recipes because yore running out of time and need to get something to decorate. If you’re using a recipe for the first time it’s always best to try it out first so you know it works. Don’t let this one incident upset you, show must go on! Make the best recipe you have, it’s better than stressing over what has failed. Good luck x
