Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A

I’m fairly new to this cake making malarkey so I may just be a bit behind the times, but my sister has just sent me the following link to Waitrose cakes…..the cakes we can compete with, but how do we compete with prices like that? Any words of advice….or encouragement?

There’s no way we can compete with those prices but I no longer worry about this. I did when I first started out but there are a lot of people out there who do want a unique, personal hand made cake and when they see their cake appreciate the time and effort which has gone into it. Word then tends to spread. Try not to worry about it and don’t make the mistake of charging too little. There are quite a lot of people out there who are unable to afford prices for handmade cakes so I do think supermarket cakes do serve a purpose if that makes sense. I’m probably going on too much now but only advice I can offer is dont try to compete, concentrate on building up your own clientele who will keep coming back and bringing their friends. I totally agree with Scarlett, the more discerning customer knows full well the difference between a bespoke cake from one which is mass produced for supermarkets. Other members have raised similar concerns in the past and have received similar advice as given by Scarlet. A beautiful hand made cake will live in memory far longer than anything brought home in a supermarket carrier bag!

Once people taste a goodcake they won,t do supermarket .make sure your cakes taste good ,
