Tier depths

Ive been doing cakes for a couple of years now, im doing really well with birthday cakes, Ive got three wedding cake orders, one for later this year and two for next year, plus a giant batternburg for a wedding, I have done some two tier cakes but so far I have only made my tier depths 3″, I have only got 3″ deep tins so far.

I think I need to start offereing 4″ deep cakes for weddings as well, and up to 6″, I love the cakes that have different depth cakes.

I think I should start with making the 4″ deep ones making two cakes in the tins I have to get the depth if and when someone orders a deeper cake.

My question is, what depth do you all make for wedding cakes most often?

Ive got a free website and i am going to add a price page and list a starting price for three tier cakes and give options of 3″ deep or 4″ deep and upwards, i.e a 4″ bottom tier with a 6″ top tier with peonies on is a cake i want to make soon as a display cake and put on my website, im going to buy stuff i need to make them, cutters, veiner, cell board etc

Does it sound like im doing the right thing? Its so hard, it never ends all the spending, cant believe im going to have to start buying more tins now possibly?

Hello 1979lizzy

This all sounds really exciting! If you think you’re ready to offer more it can only be all good.
I’m not in business so don’t really know what brides want nowadays but I do see so many beautiful tall cakes which lend themselves to fanatastic designs.
I don’t know if you’re already a Pro member http://www.cakeflix.com/get-started-with-pro-membership but if not my advice to you would be to make that your first port of call. Pro membership will set you up in business in the most cost effective way, especially since you will be investing in more equipement and other business linked activities. The Pro course blew my mind away! The immediate savings which can be made pays for the course more or less striaght away and also some of the course cost can be claimed back in tax.
I may be preaching to the converted here! Good luck, wishing you only the very best.
