Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
To dowel or not to dowel!
Hi
I am going to be making a cake for a friend. 8 inch chocolate with a dummy 6 inch on top.
Do you think I should dowel the bottom tier, first time making any type of stacked cake!
Many thanks x

Hi Suzanne2401
If the bottom cake a chocolate mud cake, one which is dense and firm it should be able to take the weight of the sugarpaste with which you’ll be covering the dummy. The dummy itself is pretty weightless However, as this is the first time stacking, I would suggest placing in five dowels into the cake instead of the normal nine which Paul teaches. Make sure the dummy is on it’s own little cake card just as if it was a real cake.
It’ll be good practice for you so you’ll be less nervous when you have to do another with a real cake on top.

Hope all goes well!
Hi madeitwithlove
Thanks so much for your speedy reply.
It is quite a dense cake but will definitely take your advise using the dowels and card etc, like you say it will also be good practice for the future 🙂
Thanks again xx
