Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
VAT on baking and cake decorating classes
Hi, it’s a bit late to phone HMRC so thought I would ask on here. Will phone in the morning if you helpful people don’t know the answer. I am just setting up a business and as part of it I plan to run children’s baking and cake decorating classes and parties. I just want to know will there be VAT on them? Couldn’t find the answer on the many pages of the HMRC website 🙁 Starting to think I should just stick to making cakes, haha! Any help and advice would be much appreciated x
Hope this takes you there!

Hi Mini Bakes
There will be VAT payable on some things so best place of inquiry would be HMRC. Since you are just setting up in business I couldn’t recommend more highly the pro membership courses which cover all aspects of baking and decorating business. If you like to see more information just click on the pro membership tab at the top of this page or contact [email protected] for further discussion.
Thank you and I already have pro membership – its great!
Phone HMRC today and they said to look at http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000117&propertyType=document#P227_16499 If anyone else is interested. By the looks of things if I do the class then there won’t be any VAT but if I have someone helping or doing the classes then there will be standard VAT on their classes or a proportion of the class that they do.
Wishing you the best in your venture x
David has started a discussion on this topic in the Pro Forum. I think if you are registered for VAT then you have to add it to the course fee?
I am a member of pro but I can’t seem to find the discussion. Any chance you could post a link for me? Many thanks x
