1. Creating the ruffles
Paul starts with the cakes already covered. If you need a reminder of how he covers deep round cakes go to Stacking a Double Barrelled cake and the Covering a Cake Board free lessons.
He then starts to make the ruffles very quickly and easily using the Karen Davies ruffle rose mould. It’s a far quicker method than when Paul filmed his first Ruffle Rose cake in 2013 when all the ruffles had to be handmade!
NOTE: Paul uses 11 of each size
2. Adding the roses
It’s just a case of working out the jigsaw and putting the different flower sizes and leaves together. Paul talks through his thought process to come up with his pattern, but feel free to come up with your own design.
3. Decorating the bottom tier
Using the same techniques as for the top tier Paul now decorates the bottom tier. He ponders where to place the roses where the bottom and top tier would overlap, but eventually settles with a very small overlap.
4. Making the rapid rose
To complement the design Paul makes two roses using Natalie Porter’s Rapid Rose. Natalie’s made a few tutorials with us which you can check out on Natalie’s Tutor Page.
5. Painting the cake
Paul brings the cake to life by painting with some gentle shades, which bring a lovely soft tone to the design.
6. Finishing Touches
Time to bring the roses and petals together and arrange them on the cake. Paul’s using a dummy cake, but if you are using real cake then remember you use posy pics or straws to ensure that the cake remains foodsafe.
